Our Founder

Garrick Soon

Garrick Soon is the founder of ProtoKing. He is a second generation master moulder who studied under post-war industrialists – the pioneers of tooling and fabrication for mass productions.

Garrick has achieved a mastery in fabrication which allows him to be agile and fluid. He is never fixated on rules, techniques, or what the computer says. Instead, he anchors to a set of core principles which gave him more reliability and freedom.

Over the past 20 years in the fabrication industry, Garrick has time and again proved that the impossible can be done. He has tackled and solved numerous fabrication challenges which are otherwise deems impossible by peers. So much so that he was referred to as the “ProtoKing” by his clients.

Today, Garrick leads an international team of designers and engineers which seeks to “Empower Ideas”. Through ProtoKing, he offers a range of services from product conceptualisation, industrial design, R&D through to manufacture.

One of the biggest difficulties lies in the nature of us humans, where we will almost always be resistant to change. Sometimes we need to embrace new methods and techniques to achieve new and better things

What motivated you to enter into the creative industry?

The creative industry was not where I first started; rather I was in the manufacturing and tooling industry. I was fascinated by the mass-production of products in large quantities; this made me curious about how they were done.

Some time later, I met with designers with ideas that could not be manufactured due to tooling limitations. I guess this was what aroused my curiosity to find solutions around these problems. I then began to research into plastic and steel material and fabrication methods.

Who would you like to design for?

We must not misunderstand. We do not just design but we offer much more in terms of problem-solving and consulting– we create prototypes that can be manufactured almost immediately.

I like to keep an open mind as to whom I would like to work with… But I guess I would like to work with people who believe in us to get the job done and who are open to change.

Which project has given you the most satisfaction so far?

Working with Bosch gave me the most satisfaction so far because we made multiple breakthroughs in production. I get such immense satisfaction by making things possible.

Beyond that, my greatest satisfaction is to share my knowledge with clients so as to allow them to incur minimum costs in production.

What are the challenges you encountered while working so close with manufacturing plants all over the world?

One of the biggest difficulties lies in the nature of us humans, where we will almost always be resistant to change. Sometimes we need to embrace new methods and techniques to achieve new and better things.

How important is the manufacturing process on top of the design process?

There is little point in designing something that cannot be realized. I would say people often neglect or think very simply about the manufacturing process. However, that is often the toughest and most time consuming phase.
